Phil Collins

First he was retiring, then his rep said no, now he says he is. Will you miss the musician?

Discuss this post

Loosing yet another talented musician over the crap Hollywood chooses to support and push upon the masses...Never thought I'd see the day where teenagers are considered superior and the people with real talent are laid to rest! It must be the end of the world like they say...

Phil ... Good luck, you will be missed. Your music was a breath of fresh air, a welcome change from the c**p we're subjected too these days. Justin Bieber???? Pleeeeeze give me a break.

Enjoy your retirement.

You kidding me; not to remember Phil Collins. The guy it's a legend and I believe that many people of the generation who grow up in the 80's will remember him; lots of good memories...

Phil Collins is a legend ... coming up through Genesis as a progressive rock musician, the man is a genius. While I wish him all the luck, I do hope he returns, somewhere down the line. He does need to spend some time with his family.

But, I suspect, that with all things, that we'll see see some new material from him about 10 years down the line. He still manages to produce gold and platinum singles, no matter what he's doing.

Wow, a reincarnated Alamo survivor? that makes perfect sense. If you play his music backwards it sounds like mariachi band music or the spanish national anthem.  Hard to tell.

Go speed? Isn't speeding the number one killer among drivers? lol...

I think his retiring to focus on his family is a great thing. I wish Charlie would do the same thing.... retire... focus on his kids.

Phil has certainly earned a ranking among the all-time greats. I still remember the incredible "Invisible Touch" tour with Genesis... Personally, I think his "...but seriously" album was his finest solo effort. Not that any of his other albums weren't great in their own right.'

Thank you Phil for the decades of music you've shared with us. And if you ever get to feeling like you want to make a comeback, I'll be sitting in the iTunes store waiting...

Phil Collins and Genisis was the first step to the lame music we hear today.

His stuff was commercial and derivative. Phil is right, he won't be missed.

Long live the Dead, Janis, the Quicksilver Messenger Service, Boz Scaggs and all the great San Francisco-Bill Graham music that was the Renaissance of Rock.

I respectfully disagree with the first part, BUT, you do list some great acts.

But again, two entirely different eras, let alone styles, of music.

How lame the music of today is, depends on your point of view. I listen to everything. Classical, jazz, pop, classic rock, metal, rap, techno, "oldies".... I am a huge James Taylor fan, but his style isn't for everyone. Just like everyone can't appreciate Metallica. I'll agree that there are some acts out there that I find to be 'lame', like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. No offense to their fans, but I find them to be lacking.

There are far too many "cookie cutter" acts out there. You turn on the radio and song after song is the same boring thing. But I listen and occasionally discover someone new that I like. I recently discovered Michael Franti and Spearhead. The style is different and enjoyable. So it's not all 'lame', you just have to be willing to listen for what appeals to you. Give some of them a chance. Not all of them are from the cookie factory.

Once upon a time, talent mattered, but now image is all that's important. Michael Franti and Spearhead is a notable exception.

Really?? Phil Collin's music stands out as relevant and entertaining. I very much doubt th Miley Cyrus or Justin B. will be remembered in 40 years. Phil has lasted this long because he is one of the best!!!

Sort of agree with Seen It All but his comments ignore the real Genesis, when Peter Gabriel led the band. Peter has never indulged in the admittedly well crafted drivel that Collins led Genesis into a couple of albums after his departrue. Gabriel is still making creative music today and supporting musicians from all over the world. They're like night and day.

It's always funny when commenters post stuff like "Lost interest in this story awhile back" or "why is this news?" or "Who cares?".

And yet they still clicked on and/or read the article.

Here's a clue folks. No body cares that you don't care. Posting and telling us that you don't care isn't going to change that fact.

Best of luck Phil. Family is important. Don't bother about the negative posts, as you carved out a nice notch with your music. I have most of your albums, listen to them all the time. Hope the best for you & your family.

I had the opportunity to work with Mr. Collins and Genesis back i nthe day (early 30's) when they played at the Greek Theater in Berkeley during the Abacab Tour. Three fabulous days, punctuated by watching Phil dote over his then-young children, as any good father would.

Not at all surprised by this announcement and I wish him all the best. He's left us with more than enough fantabulous tunage to listen to (thank you, Sir), and, should he ever find something more down the road that he'd like to share, I will be more than happy to give it a listen.

Oh, and to that "numb nuts" 'SeenItAll'...ANY music you've ever heard is commercial, you Jack Wagon. If you don't like his music because it's either too melodic or has a catchy beat, or a production quality you're not fond of, that's find and perfectly understandable. But to dismiss his work soley on the basis that a great many people "did" enjoy it...what a maroon!

It's kind of ironic that he finds MTV so offputting, not that I disagree, when he took over as Genesis' front man when Peter Gabriel, still making great music today, left and within a few albums turned it into a joke. Bubble gum married with progressive rock and more than a bit of pretension. I though he was retired a long time ago. Great drummer, good voice, not much of an artist.

Phil collins is an absolute musical giant, I have grown up with his work with Genesis in the progressive rock band and then with his arena styled solo work encompassing worl music, rock, all kinds, he can play many instruments, sing damn good, just listen to the Genesis tacks (pre we can't dance), no one comes up to this artist today not one, because it's all about me, me, me, look at me, listen to me and not about the music. Thanks for making great music, I wish you well.
