Why do you care? I'm sure you are an avid Fox News viewer.

I for one, have huge respect for Keith Olbermann and for his show the past eight years. If he ruffled feathers, that shows how good he was. Thanks Keith for the great relief you have provided the many times when people like me thought the world was going insane.

Here we go. I expect this to blow up over the weekend, so new and old folks, check out the Code of Honor. Especially the first rule. Note that it doesn't cover public figures but does cover other Viners, so keep the passions focused on the issues at hand. Thanks.

Also, note that MSNBC.com and the TV station msnbc are not the same thing [although there obviously is some overlap in terms of sites like Maddow Blog.]

Why do you care? I'm sure you are an avid Fox News viewer.

Yeah, try to avoid stuff like this, Jemma77. No need to get personal.

MSNBC, I cannot know the reason behind the end of Countdown hosted by Keith Olberman. I can know, however, that the best news commentary program offered by your network has seen it's best and last day. I relied on Mr. Olberman to be the resounding voice of reason when all other voices were screaming God knows what to spur hatred, anger, fear, not so veiled racism, ridiculous notions of Socialism and leading an alarming number of Americans down a path of all out lunacy.

I will miss the program, but I will miss the eloquence, soundness of reasoning and the wee bit of humor served courtesy of Mr. Olberman's talent & insight that took the edge of of my every day. May God go with you, Mr. Olberman. May all of your endeavors be successful, and I hope to see you again on a network more deserving of your professionalism, journalistic prowess and good old fashioned common folk sense.

Who cares? This guy was an arrogant tool and the fact that he was "the most respected" on that network says a lot about that network. He should have never left Sports Center, he was great and funny.

Who would care if any of these talking heads mentioned above- the equally pompous and arrogant O'Reilly, or Beck and Hannity were to leave either?

Why do people continue to believe that these people have any bearing on anybodies opinion? Why is it that people always think they are so much smarter than everybody else and that they know better?

People think for yourselves and stop deleting harmless comments just because you disagree with the opinions. What babies, 1st thing I do is check the "collapsed/deleted by community" comments. Freedom of speech and expression of opinions (as long as it is the same as yours) what a joke!

That demonstrates the power of corporations over journalism. I wonder how long will Comcast take to fire the other commentators from their lineup so we have more neocon pundits in the news. It wasn't enough for the corporations to control our lives, now they control which news are considered 'adequate' for their agenda. I agreed and disagreed with Olbermann in many topics, but he was a control valve for the indiscriminate idiocy that could be seen two channels after (for those who don't know, msnbc is on channel 30 and Fix News in channel 32). But now I found more than a reason to erase those channels from my lineup. I guess for msnbc is more important to watch how people live in prison...

Olbermann is the greatest part of why I gave up on MSNBC (Maddow pretty well makes up the remainder.) I watched him and never once saw him give an unslanted report. I never saw him interview a person who disagreed with his views on politics, religion, or any other aspect of people's lives. His bloviating is tiresome and his views irresponsible. Where ever he goes I will not follow. Why he's going, I don't care. That he's going is a boon for MSNBC. This is my opinion and it is irrelevant what any other commentator/interviewer on any other network has said or done.

Countdown and the Oreily Factor were good competitors. You have to watch both to muddle thru the propaganda. Of course, you could polarize to one or the other but you would be less informed.

Wouldn't you like to see a debate between the commentators from FOX and MSNBC? I'd pay to watch it. I can see Rachel and Rush, Kieth and Beck, Ed and O'Reily, all going at it in a debate or discussion panel.

Wow, I can't watch reality prisons, they make my head hurt. Catching child molesters for a show? Not entertaining for me. What else does MSNBC offer?...

Strangers to logic and fact - that's the right-wing.

I hate Olbermann, so I don't watch MSNBC. Well of course, his show airs for three hours daily, Monday through Friday. Sound logic.

Olbermann erred on occasion. He owned up to his errors ON THE AIR, corrected them and apologized. Better to go the Fox route and pretend it never happened. Or better yet, just continue the lying. Facts can be so irritating.

Olbermann promoted health clinics for very needy people. He exposed, for all to see, the miserable failure of our health care system. Did you compassionate conservatives miss that?

Could Olbermann be a bit over-the-top? You bet. But facts and logic were always front and center. Would that Fox could make that claim.

Sounds like David hit a nerve, P_O. The truth, which the Right and Faux news followers are so unfamiliar with, was the main component of Countdown. In a recent Univ. of Maryland study, it was determined that the news channel with the least misinformation was MSNBC, while FOX "News" had the most. But the Right isn't big on facts, they prefere to be told what to think.

Some corrections to all the misinformation posted above:

  • The COMCAST purchase received regulatory approval last week; it hasn't closed yet.
  • Unlike the Fox cable channel, MSNBC has no reference to "news" in its nomenclature. It is known as "the place for politics." The hosts you all love to hate, i.e. Olbermann, Maddow, etc., didn't/don't have shows on NBC News.
  • Unless and until some regulation is reinstated that requires serving the public interest, even the "news" programs on commercial broadcast networks will continue to be the news-free entertainment shows they've become. Only PBS maintains a semblance of journalistic integrity, but its funding is in jeapordy now.
  • Cable networks were never subject to the (long-gone) FCC licensing regulations since they don't broadcast over public airwaves. MSNBC's liberal perspective has been an appropriate counter to Murdoch's Fox machine.

I'd prefer a return to conditions which existed prior to the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and that both Fox "News" and MSNBC go away but, given the absurd Citizens United decision, we're probably stuck with Fox for a long time. The ideal outcome would be for George Soros to submit a higher bid to GE than COMCAST did and take over MSNBC. He's constantly falsely accused of such funding, so why not actually do it? He could out-Murdoch Murdoch. :-) Yes, it's a fantasy, but The West Wing sustained me through those dark Bush years, so I'll dream for a while.

      Keith Olbermann:

He needs to re focus on his approach in the field of the News Media. Harsh words, and making making fun of Public and Political Figures is passe.

I doubt that he will return, but seek a Sports Announcer position. That is where he is best at work. He was good on ESPN.

I do think that when he was suspended the first time, MSNBC had some kind of talk with him, giving Keith a certain amount of time after to shape up, or he would be out permanently; or they found more campaign money given to others that he didn't report. There is definitely something we don't know about this story yet.

Keith was fired because he ruffled Phil Griffin's feathers. But what is more important to a network, the delicate ego of an easily replaceable executive, or the not so replaceable ratings of a very popular show? Who's more important NBC Universal - your audience or an executive who flippantly turns a massive chunk of your audience away? Ad dollars follow ratings and ratings come from viewers. But you know that - to turn away your viewers is to turn away your dollars. How can you hope to compete with Fox if your first big decision of the New Year is to let your most popular show die? That's a bad decision economically...existentially. The person who makes such a colossally poor decision should be let go for strategic incompetence. Fire Phil Griffin for letting his ego over-rule core business fundamentals. NBC Universal, fire Phil Griffin before Comcast does.

On a side note, I really enjoy the negative comments posted on this site by Fox commentators posing as MSNBC fans - truly comical. Keep them coming you fearless right-wingers-faking-as-independents. Your false equivalencies, demographically-based anger, and stumbling, butchered readings of the Constitution are quite entertaining. Your careless rigidity betrays you.

NO ONE wants to watch your show, except for a handful of morons around the country, which means we CANNOT SELL ANY advertising. It is better for us to buy out your contract "and pay ANYONE else to replace you and your worthless show!" So beat it!

Guess who's NEXT? Madcow disease and Butt-face Shultz.

Since PMS-NBC's shows consistently have the WORST possible ratings on TV, getting rid of Olberman suggests the new management is eliminating that entire "brain-dead lineup"of angry, moronic, blowhard buffoons and other psychologically challenged freaks.

If PMS-NBC EVER has hosts that EVER attract a higher volume of viewers, then and only then will PMS-NBC will be able to sell advertising.

PMS-NBC finally realized, You cannot SELL advertising with NO viewers, duh?

Keith is a phony and his show was borderline unwatchable! He is a rich, old, white man who is part of the greedy capitalist establishment! I, for one am glad that he has now joined the ranks of the unemployed. I hope he stays unemployed and loses all of his money - forcing him to get a REAL job. This way he can see how normal American's live! He will not be missed by anyone with an IQ above 60!!

I think MSNBC would show brilliance if they bought SPAlaska from TLC and run it in Olbermans time slot for a few weeks. That would: 1. Take 25% if Oreilly's audience away and leave him unable to complain. 2. cleanse the 8pm airways on msnbc, 3. Give the Keith mouners a chance to do shots everytime she mentions artillery, and 4. Would allow the sane msnbc watchers to learn a little more about the real contender for the GOP ticket in 2012.

The conservatives have one less critic to show them what idiots they are.

This message is for whoever is pretending to monitor this site.

My guess is that the comment from, Stephen 2962811, is artificially being kept at the top of this discussion stream, because it is inflammatory. You will not remove it because your corporate masters have ordered that it be kept at the top of this string precisely because it is inflammatory. Shame on you, you corporate slave to money.

Your cowardly inaction is an excellent example of how this culture has gotten to this awful place. You know it, so why don't you free yourself from your corporate masters, oh, right, you need to keep your job. That is what every sell out in the long; brutal path of the human race in it's struggle to be free has decided, other folks welfare is not my concern, just me and mine matter. This is your moment to do what you know is right, yet, you do not.

Every slave in human history had the overseer, a slave who co-operated with the slave masters in order to benefit themselvesn to deal with. Shame on you.

Wow...That is change we can believe in. Hope and change. Get back to reporting the news and not making it up. Would be good for all Networks to follow this example.

Which was a commentary to a move in the right direction for media to get out of the business of promoting politics and report what really goes on. One less biased pundit is good...lets see if all the networks can do as much.

I still don't understand why I was attacked for collapse or why no one had the spine to claim responsibility.

What a rough and tough job these guys have, especially in this day and time. I enjoyed Countdown, and I will miss hearing Mr. Olberman's unique and distinct voice. Moreover, I will miss a voice of reason in this surreal world of idiocy, fear and outright rage coming from the insane talking heads on the right side of the talk television aisle. On the bright side, we still have Rachel and, of course, Comedy Central with Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert. Other than those 3 shows and hosts, I can't find one good reason to turn that HD 1080hp LED boob tube on anymore. Goodbye and God bless, Mr. Olberman!

What do you expect from a bunch of greedy, cowardly midgets in the corporate media.

Remember they axed Phil Donahue for similar reasons.

Shows you how tight a lease you're on when you are even moderately left of center. I mean Olberman supported the fellow corporate servants of the Republicans, the Democrats, for crisakes not Hugo Chavez or someone like that (too, bad but then if he had supported Hugo he would have never even made it in the corporate media for one second).

I think MSNBC saw their opportunity after the Tucson killings. As if the Worst Person in The World Award was on the same level of rhetoric as the things right wing shock jocks on the Radio or right wing TV hosts get away with all the time. This new "civility" is seeming a lot more like censorship all the time.

After the Democrats won he and Maddow became much less interesting I thought. Always having to shill for the Dems and pretend they were really an alternative to the Republicans no matter how craven the sell-out of their constituents they engaged in (like Obama caving on extending the tax cuts for the rich).

Unions should have media like corporations do. They are the only ones that have the resources to do something like that but being very timid and many of them corrupted by too close association with corporations they don't seem to have the will to do it.

You are seriously SMART. Comcast is cleaning "house".

Olbermann had no talent to be a talk show host anywhere. He should go back to being a Sports Announcer.

Talk about Political Rhetoric that is damning. He was horrible.

Mr. Olbermann, I may not have agreed with everything you said, and I was sometimes concerned that someone with your talent felt the need to push foul language to enforce some of your "shock" comments (foul language, sadly, no longer shocks or emphazises anything), I agreed with much that you said. Whether I agreed or not was never of any consequence, of course, but I will freely add my opinion to the many that you were (and I am positive will be again) the best writer on your network, and perhaps any network. And your delivery, while as passionate as other commentators delivering their perspective, never had the shrill sound of talk radio hosts on the right or the ask a question and tell what the answer should be of several hosts on the left.

As a politcal junkie that still believes he who governs best governs in the center, I will miss you, and I hope not for long. Go back to Rupert Murdock and provide FOX News? with some perspective. Yes. I am just kidding about that.

Actually, MSNBC is showing signs that it may not be so stupid after all. Getting rid of this tool shed was the first step towards admiting liberals are hackjobs.

Most Americans have realized that, as reflected in the mid-term elections. I'm proud of you, MSNBC, but you've still got a long way to go to reach enlightenment. This was a good first step, though.

FDR's social security Ponzi Scheme is coming due. LBJ's medicare, medicaid have bankrupted us and created a class of people completely dependent on government without being ashamed of it. Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, etc. socialized the mortgage market and encourged lenders to loan to people who couldn't afford the loans. Wouldn't you gamble with the casino's chips?

Pitiful liberals. Ratigan is the only somewhat reasonable person on that network.

He served as a role model example for others to follow with honesty, integrity, and reliability. We wish him well with his next endeavor whatever that may be.

I love your show, and I am also in shock. I think you have been one of the best TV News commentators I have ever watched. I hope you may return to a newscast with your same approach to news. Your talant, understanding not just of politics but people, and your ability to speak and share important viewpoints and the reality "the way it is, the truth" to your audience is remarkable. I hope to see you return to newscast as you will have a viewer in me. Thank you for the enlightnment you have givin me over the past 8 years, It would be a pleasure. good luck Kieth.

Add him to the ever growing list of Hyper Liberal News broadcasters who have bit the dust. Olbermann made a Media 101 mistake when he became a part of the story instead of just reporting facts.

Be it on CNN or CNBC... the list of broadcasters who have either been shown the door, or have left because they refused to continue spouting "Leftist Rancor" against any and everything moderate or Conservative...

In just 5 years names like... Erica Hill, Lou Dobbs, Glen Beck, Cambell Brown, John Roberts, Nancy Lane, Robert Novack... and others have departed the likes of CNN or CNBC because of horrible rating the networks have or deputes concerning having to tote the Liberal Line if they want to stay there have led to them leaving on their own merit.

It is becoming crystal clear that the Leftist agenda is folding like a lawn chair. I suppose now with Olbermann gone... the 4 or 5 people who still watch CNN will find a smarter and more centralist source of media. It will be good for everyone that they do. Then when some nut case does some innocuous act of stupidity, we will not have to listen to them and the Podunk sheriff of wherever tell us all how its the "right wing nuts" who are to blame for the sky falling.

Bye Bye..Olbermann.... Maybe ESPN will hire you to do the NFL draft?

Commentators left or right belong on the back page ...shouldn't do news stories....same as old news paper editorials.

Dan Welch - right on the money. Kudos to you sir.

For everyone else - Politics and personal opinion have no place on a network. If you want to have a personal opinion then have your own cable show. Too many of you think that just because a person is on television, they are right about everything. Just because someone is famous DOES NOT mean that they have a brain.

But NONE of the cable network evening programming is NEWS, no matter which cable network. They are all COMMENTARY and that means that the hosts and each of their guests are there to do just that......comment on a news story from their political viewpoint. So where is the difference, other than political outlook, between Olbermann and any of the FIXNEWS staff? At least the MSNBC hosts fact checks most of their stories and comments before making them, and when they do get something wrong, they issue a retraction either on the same show if the misstatement is caught soon enough or on the following show.

BTW, Fox is starting to lose a lot of their viewers also, and they have more to lose financially because of that loss. We will have to see how much the Comcast takeover changes MSNBC into just another ultra-right network like FOX. I know the "Nightly News" on NBC will most likely change and it will be interesting to see how soon most of the news team is gone.

No doubt he will land somewhere else and take a lot of intelligent viewers with him. Good luck Keith. We'll be watching to see where you go. Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!

Congratulations to MSNBC for some sanity... FINALLY!

ZERO ratings = ZERO advertising dollars.

Most people watching television, reading newspapers or listening to radio MISS the most important point, which is?

ALL media EXISTS to make a PROFIT, which can only take place if their advertising revenue exceeds their overall costs.

As Advertising dollars shrink... something will always change, such as those programs that are a DRAG on earnings. It's called Smart Business.

                Angry Olberman

Chris "I forgot he was black" Mathews

                Madcow disease and

                Sgt. "I know nothing"Shultz

ALL consistently have some of the most DISMAL ratings in TV History, which are almost as pathetic as "Air America".

ZERO ratings + ZERO Advertising dollars. Since MSNBC probably would prefer to remain "in business" they realized the ONLY way to do that is to come up with shows "viewers WANT to watch" and obviously... Olberman is NOT one of those shows.

NO Network EVER removes a show that generates viewers and Ad dollars.

So the AXE is finally beginning to fall; Mathews, Madcom and Shultz are next.

Congratulations MSNBC! Millions and millions of Americans says THANK YOU!

Bye Bye Keith! Thrilled that you are GONE!

Well, we don't know the whole story yet so we'll have to wait and see. They can deny it if they wish, but I suspect a lot of this has to do with the Comcast deal. If it turns out to be the case, viewers can take some meaningful action. Cancel your Comcast services. Satellite TV is better anyway and in some cases even cheaper. You've probably already got tons of reasons why you hate Comcast anyway, maybe this is the last straw. If they had nothing to do with it, maybe they'll realize they got cheated in the deal and try to beg him to come back.

This is a sad day in the history of cable news. And it comes at the worst time. Keith was one of the few bright spots for many of us over the last eight years. The fact that he is so well hated by the right only proves how important he was. Every negative post here just supports that. 99% of the hatred is pure name calling with little in the way of constructive criticism. That should tell you something there.

Olbermann was not above making mistakes, but he always had the decency to retract his mistakes, unlike his right wing competition. I didn't always agree with his positions, but I respected his right to express them. He brought stories to air that would have other wise been swept under the rug and this is something I think we will all lose from.

For those who disagree, have at it. It's your right. Just like it was Keith right to try to get his views heard. It looks like some people in power had a problem with that.

1NewDay - What good is canceling your "Comcast services" going to do. Comcast is not just a cable service, they also provide content. Does your dish provider show NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, SyFy (another idiot change by NBC Universal), USA Network, Telemundo, The Weather Channel, Versus, or Oxygen? What about shows they produce that are shown on other networks. Are you going to stay away from Hulu? Get it?

The cable service, of which they are the largest in the US brings in tons of money. 23 million customers handing over ~$1000/yr each. Another ~17 million customers using their high speed internet services. 100,000 cancellations costs them $100 million at least. A million cancellations cost them 1 billion dollars. Seems to me that's the kind of money that get's people's attention.

They spent $6.5 billion on the deal with GE for NBC Universal.

Keep in mind too, they didn't buy it outright, but merely a 51% controlling interest. GE still owns 49% of NBC, so hitting Comcast in their cable business is a much more direct statement to Comcast. Bottom line is that Comcast wanted control of NBC. They bought that controlling power for a relatively cheap price. The reason you buy a controlling interest is to change the direction. They didn't buy it all, or 90% or even 60%, they bought just enough to control decisions. Read into that what you wish.

But as I said, we don't know the whole story yet. I suppose it's entirely possible that Keith may have been feeling the weight that was on his shoulders being such a strong voice. Imagine the option of having to change and compromise your principles or leave. Maybe that was more than he could agree to and stay loyal to his own beliefs and his loyal viewers. We know pretty well that Keith is not a guy motivated simply by cash. I'm certain he would say no if it meant making too big a compromise. Sure Keith has enjoyed the wealth that his celebrity status brought him, but I don't see it as his motivation. On the other hand, I think we're all pretty sure Comcast is driven by the pursuit of wealth. Denying them of some of that would be a significant move.

Most sincerely, when Keith expressed his opinions concerning the hideous travesty in the Arizona recent tragedy, I, truly, really cried. He was so on target, and his articulation of the situation stated it all. After all, he is a gift to the thinking mind.

Personally, I think his absence will be a loss to MSNBC because, after all, the viewers and thinkers who love MSNBC, are after all, free thinkers. Keith expressed his views and thinking that paralled the thinking mind. I love you, Keith and will miss you terribly and miserably. Please, MSNBc, free thinkers are, after all, the minority in this brainwashed society. We need more, not less thinkers like Keith.

We require more free-thinkers, just like Keith, regardless, than we need the brainwashed drones that set in steel, the oh so familiar course with destiny's collisions with thinking. The sad and so pitiful Earth needs more, Keith Olberman's thinking and brilliant mind.

If it is not to be, may the Gods be with Keith because, he is one, beautiful and ethical, human being. Bless! Think of what is best for America, human kind and the Earth -- before all other considerations. I love, Keith. {As an elderly female, I mean this only as, a mother loving a brilliant, free thinking son, Lol.} bless,

It's telling that Olbermann stopped his famous "days since Iraq mission accomplished" sign-off after Obama took over as puppet in chief.

My contention is that both political parties are essentially identical. They both serve the interests of big banks and the military-industrial complex. They make a stink about differing on little issues, but on all the big issues like the wars, the bailouts, the "Patriot", etc., they go along in lockstep.

In order to maintain the illusion of voter choice, propagandists in the mainstream corporate media are employed to stir up hatred for the "other side." When Republicans hold power, outlets like MSNBC play opposition. When it's Democrats in office, Fox News does the job.

Fox news never peeped when Bush tripled the size of the federal government, the same way Olbermann (and the rest of the gullible left) forgot about the two wars once Obama took office.

I can't believe so many people buy these theatrical productions, and identify with these slick propagandists who look into the camera and tell you what to think. They make millions selling the agendas of the elite.

This is a victory for fair and balanced journalism.

Olberman was not a 'journalist', but a comedian! He had one agenda and one agenda only: to distort the message of the Right and to ridicule anybody that disagreed with the liberal/socialist philosophy. And he did it in a way that wasn't debate as much as it was, in most cases, bathroom humor.

Good for MSNBC for taking a step to balanced reporting of political news! Olberman will end up as a sidekick to Letterman or on some late night Comedy Central program.

Aaron Brown at CNN was the closest thing we had on Cable TV News, to being like the old reports we grew up on...then poof, the Corporations knew they had to get a new spin away from news - to 24 hour politics - baffle them (the viewer) with BS rather than dig and investigate the cause of things. We have been so bummed down with this newly created class/party war - that we don't ask why - we only ask enough questions to support our own cause - the hell with all the facts.

News 2011 = Band(s) of cherry pickers. Play to their emotions, eliminate logic!

May whatever you do next - reading, fishing, hanging out? - be wonderful. I surely hope we're going to see and hear more from you. We need you!

Isn't this the "patriot" that out and out blamed Sarah Palin for the Tuscon shootings because he was buddies with the congress woman? Yeah, that sounds real fair and balanced. Good riddance. Now to get rid of Maddow, Beck and Limbaugh and get back to actually reporting the news, not editorialized political pieces passed off as news.

"Msnbc thanks Keith for his integral role in msnbc's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors,"

Lots of comments here, about one from every one of his very limited audience.

If Keith was a little more 'fair and balanced', he might still be around, and he was not so much 'anti-establishment', as he was anti-conservative.

And I don't buy the story that the impending Comcast buyout had nothing to do with it. Comcast is only buying NBC because they see the folly of NBC fighting for a share of the small 20% of Americans that call themselves 'liberal/progressive'. Look for a shift to the center for NBC's reporting so they can copy Rupert Murdoch's success.

I wonder if Rachael Maddow is next?

Keith will now travel to the third star then off to the left then onward to until morning where he will reach Never Never Land of the Liberal-Progressives. There is a misperception that independent thinking only takes place on the left. The same thought takes place on the right, it just arrives at a different conclusion. There is a smugness in MSNBC and NPR, etc. that their viewers/listeners are so super smart, as if that means if one don't buy into their line of thinking, well it must imply one isn't smart. Logically that is a false conclusion.

Progressives analyze a situation and if the result is good it must be worthwhile and fought for. Conservatives look at that same situation and add an extra layer, can we actually afford to implement such without causing undo stress on society, employment, etc. Would it be great to have universal health care for all, absolutely. Would it be great to have universal health care and pay euro-taxes, have euro-unemployment, and the country wind up euro-bankrupt; well that is, as they say, 'a bridge too far'. So, tell me, who is putting more thought into it?

The loss of Keith Olbermann is the gain for greater civility. One blowhard down but unfortunately many others to go. Less polarization and greater acceptance of opposing points of view is a good thing for the national psyche.

Apparently the two reasons they canned him was because he is such an a-hole to deal with and he can't compete with O'Reilly on Fox. Don't worry, they will replace him with someone just as vile, disgusting and radically left-wing and that person will have the results.

I find it interesting how the right screams to high heaven if any suggestions are made regarding their notorious pundits that would suggest some legal approach to cleaning up rhetoric on the airways. They always talk about how this would be suppressing free speech.

I could agree with their view if it were not for the fact that their approach to suppressing free speech is through drowning out voices they don't like and using corporate influence to suppress what they don't want to hear.

A classic example of the drowning out method is displayed right here in collapsing comments that are absolutely non-controversial or inflammatory in any way, they just say something they don't want to hear.

The corporate suppression method is evidenced by the termination of MSNBC's contract with Keith. As someone pointed out here, a similar instance occurred with the silencing of Aaron Brown about 5 years ago. In his case he was prevented from doing any other TV reporting for another 3 years. My guess is there will be some similar suppression of Mr. Olbermann. Without a doubt, this is "legal" suppression of free speech. The right screamed loudly when Juan Williams was terminated by PBS, but Juan was still free to go elsewhere to voice his opinions. (PBS is hardly a comparison to the corporate media giants.)

The media in this country has sadly become huge corporate PR machines. They are controlled by the wealthy elite who don't hesitate to mold their messages they way they want. We all know that the large corporate voices tend to be weighted heavily to the right. These guys will try to buy any politician regardless of party, but that doesn't change their agendas any.

There should be a wake up call here. The left tries to compete with the right but somewhat foolishly does so by trying to stay within some self imposed bounds. They don't usually call for the silencing of opposing voices, but rather try to push for a set of ground rules for both to be governed by. Maybe this is foolish idealism when the opposition insists on no rules and operates with a "take no prisoners" attitude. The radical right, although a minority, has a lot of momentum and are turning up the heat even higher in numerous ways to swing the middle to their side. Keith is just another casualty. Those in the middle need to take notice. They may be feeling that they have no strong opinion one way or another regarding this instance, but they should understand what is really happening here. We are quickly getting close to a time when there's really only one voice coming from the media that we all consume. This is very dangerous for true free speech.

LOL @ the people talking about the First Amendment then collapsing people's comments because they don't say what you want to hear. I guess there's freedom of speech, but only as long as they agree with what you think. Thanks for the good laugh.

Maybe if you're lucky he can get a spot on TBS after George Lopez or possibly after the Conan rerun...if they are willing to take a chance on a political format. Realistically if he doesn't land a CNN gig or a sports gig he might only be available on Radio or local TV. My advice to Keith is to hurry and write a "scathing" tell all book of his times and final days at MSNBC and why he left or was forced to leave. It has to be ASAP while he still has followers, before he slips back into obscurity.

Susan, totally, concur. Keith represents the free, American mind, unleashed from societal voices and brainwashing that impacts this nation's ability to reason and think.

Inherent in this mind, Keith's intellect, is after all, the ability to arouse thoughts, free thinking and the future. America needs more like Olbermann, not less-- because he stimulates the American conscious. And conscience. If Keith is not for America and justice, freedoms and the utopian mind, then who is???

I hope the nightly programming can eventually swing to a more reasoned and civil approach with opinions delivered from both sides of the aisle. With a little luck night time will change its tune and become more thought-provoking, like Morning Joe.

                  thumper -

Joe Scarborough might be THE only Repulican (conservative) on all of MSNBC.

Exactly what is wrong with having ALL sides of an issue represented - CIVILY - and letting people decide for themselves who they agree with?

Morning Joe also has a very wide list of guests - from BOTH sides of a debate, not just the side that agrees with Joe or Mika. They rarely engage in the bloviating and hyperbole that was Olbermann's hallmark, and when one of their guests launches into a talking point spew, they call them on it.

It's a good show - IF AND ONLY IF you can tolerate the civil presentation of BOTH sides of the story.

If you only want to hear that with which you agree, then don't watch it.

You bring something that is at the root of the media's irrelevance compared to the Watergate era. The need to show "both sides" is what I find most disturbing. It's lazy and a copout. What happened to journalism trying to find the TRUTH of a situation and not just having a split screen ping pong argument on genocide between some U.N. diplomat and Adolf Hitler's kin. Susan, Aren't you concerned about Keiths' incendiary rhetoric which constantly streams out of his hateful mouth?

Well put. Olberman was a partisan hack who couldnt attract enough market share to maintain the show he had. Say what you want about other partisan hacks on other stations, at least they carry ratings.

The writing was on the wall when his segments were cancelled from Sunday Night Football. He was causing people to change channels during football night in America. That's bad.

Olberman's ratings sucked. There is no one that can complete with O'Reilly in that time slot - however so does the ratings all of MSNBC programming - and he was an a-hole to deal with.

No worries though, they will replace him with someone just as vile and disgusting

You really don't know what he was about unless you watched his show on a regular basis. At least Keith told the truth, at least he told us when he was going to make a personal "commentary". He did not pass his opinion off as hard fact news, like others do. I am so sick of you Conservatives, Tea Bags, and ANY others bashing LIBERALS ! There are all types of liberals - but you won't get a word of what I have said. You just HATE. I pity ALL of you.

After reading comments from his fans, I'm going to take a leap (not literally) and guess that they sacked him because he was the poster child of what Obama asked for less of following the Tuscon attacks, and the left hate that ensued. If so, I'll bet that MSNBC is praying that those that follow him and continue to spew hatred, go with him and take their posts too. Educated guess, but I'll bet I'm right.

The ones that get read by a casual passerby.

Matthews spits more than Olbermann. Immelt is appointed by Obama as head of the "Jobs Creation Committee" so guess Olbermann served his purpose and is no longer needed in the left wing propaganda department at NBC. Wonder if Maddows and Schultz et al will soon follow? Comcast's buyout have anything to do with this? Who knows.

Oh for God's sake to call Keith everything from a racist to a Socialist is the default of the simple minded. What is it about the reactionary mind? These parties are never for anything but rather against somebody or something. They see enemies all about and play the victim perpetually. They are ignorant and are easily played by the propagandists of the world (see FOX News). They vote against their own self interest every time. They confuse wearing patriotism on their sleeve with jingoism. They throw Socialist, Communist and Nazi about with such abandon it is obvious to all that they have no knowledge of History or the definitive and clear delineation separating each of these political constructs. And they never let facts get in the way!

I actually watch Fox, MSNBC and CNN. In doing so I hear conversations in context. Those who watch MSNBC only hear non-stop whining about what Beck, Hannity and O'Reilly say. My guess is that anything you've heard any of those three say was durring one of Oberman's whining sessions. On the contrary, Fox rarely even mentions Oberman and the MSNBC gang, because they are irrelevant.

Cool-aid drinkers don't tend to venture outside their circles. Get out a bit Curtis you might learn something.

Most people don't watch just one Cable Station. You are very correct. The average American wants different views on the same subject. It could be a 'car" chase; the Arizona massacre; 9/11 event; not just Politics.

It stretches the mind to view all information that is available in Media, magazines, newspaper resources on an important issue. Independent thinking.

I'm sure most of the people on this board are watching Fox News, and others, Fox having the highest viewers audience ratings.

Why else would they know about Limbaugh, Beck, Levine, Hannity, and O'Reilly?

There is a huge difference between watching a show and watching a show that shows negative clips of another show. My point is that most MSNBC watchers get their opinion of Fox news only from the likes of Obermann (Fox news watchers are not immune to this either, but Fox tends to ignore MSNBC). Not exactly objective. My opinions of Obermann, Madow, and the rest is gathered from actually watching the shows. Rational thought on those shows is seriously lacking, they are painful to watch.

I DID NOT KNOW WHAT THIS MAN EVEN LOOKED LIKE.

I VAGUELY RECALL SOME NEWSVINERS TALKING ABOUT HIM AS IF HE IS A GOD.

It's not all that important to have 7000 posts about it.

I'LL BET THAT 80% OF AMERICANS COULD CARE LESS ABOUT KEITH OLBERMANN.

WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT NEWSVINE POSTERS?

I am afraid this is the course when we allow these massive Right wing monopolies to form up. No real surprise that Olberman is released hours after Comcast took over NBC.

Honestly, many of the negative comments and childish pejoratives here are from parties who probably never watched his show. Those among us who are so easily steered by propaganda are it seems at the same time incapable of factual discourse or an educated opinion. I occasionally watch FOX News for it's entertainment value, a good laugh and to know what the "other guys" are trying to sell at the moment. I have watched Glen Beck and he is without question a paranoid (though high functioning) Psychopath. It is sad that a great journalist on par with Edward R. Murrow has left the stage and a clown still packs the house!

I'll miss Keith Olbermann it seems MSNBC apparently feels lowering oneself to the lowest common denominator (like FOX) is the way to go. I've seen it here at Newsvine which has degenerated so as to be unrecognizable since being acquired by MSNBC and demonstrated by the very large numbers of writers and posters that have quit. Good luck MSNBC being FOX II, maybe Murdoch can just buy them out. I hope Rachel moves on soon, I think she is too smart to stay on at MSNBC. Censorship really isn't the way to go and now I couldn't believe anything coming from any of their "commentators".

Keith Olbermann should go back to being a Sports Announcer--that is his profession. He won't lack for a job, but not in the Cable News Arena.

His approach is harsh, brazen, and enough to turn him off the tube immediately.

Ratings. It's all about ratings. He was asking for what he got.

The “Special Comment” speaking right in and to the face of power for the common man is silenced now. There is only O’Donnell now for me and who knows how long he will stay? Where do I go for my “Special Comment”?

I was starting to post again and now………………….post? …………………I learned of this only this morning I can see nearly over 200 pages on this subject and counting, more than I have ever seen during the many years on this site.

Goodbye MSNBC and as for posting, I’ll be around now and then, sooner or later, very likely the latter - a big mistake for MSNBC - now watch the ratings drop as you can tell by the number of pages and counting for my pal and yours Mr. Keith Olbermann. Job well done, lad.

                              RIP: MSNBC

Thank God the end of a waste of space. Keith Olbermann was a lousy sports commentator and a lousy leftist "news" commentator for a leftist company. He would completely grant my fantasy if he were to be struck mute so no self respecting American would be subjected to his unrelenting diatribes that could cause a real deaf mute to suffer greatly. For all of you lefties that fall inline and kiss this guys ass, you should be ashamed but I know you are not and that is really very sad that you cant think for yourselves. I wish I could put Keith in my pocket and take him everywhere I go. I would feed him candy and cookies and go to the park with him. Later that night Keith and I would eat cake for dinner and then I would give him a bath. Then I'd brush his hair and then we'd sleep under our Keith Olbermann sheets and I would say "Goodnight Keith" and he would say "Goodnight." Then I would say "sweetdreams" and he would have sweet dreams all night.

I love Keith. He's my best friend in the whole world.

Olberman's ratings were so low that they had to pick him up out of Arnold Ziffel's slop every night before slapping a suit and makeup on him. But that didn't stop him from foaming at the mouth on every show. In the end you can only be THE WORST HOST on THE WORST SHOW with THE WORST RATINGS for so long before it catches up with you, and then you are sent back out to the pasture with the rest of the bloviating bovines. Not to worry Olberman fans (all 200 of you) I hear there is a spot opening up at the White House very soon. But I'm not sure Obama will stoop that low, so don't get your hopes up too much. If that doesn't work out then I hear there are a lot of openings this summer at the county fairs for barn hands. Keith will fit right in. Hell, given all his experience with slinging the sht night in and night out, he will probably get to work in the barn with the biggest cows. But he'll have to get used to wearing a muffler over his mouth, they won't let him work the stalls without one. They don't want the cows passing out from all the gas that normally comes out of it.

Olbermann is nothing more than a desperate shill for a failed ideology. Intelligent people don't swallow that shallow mindless swill he was spewing. That show failed in the marketplace. No viewer patronage. There simply aren't that many stupid sheeple around to support a campaign operation for communism. He failed in the ratings. The same thing is happening to Maddow, Mathews, talking Ed, Mitchell and the rest of their comrades at MSNBC. They purport to be a news organization, but report what they want the news to be, sprinkled with misrepresentations and outright lies while ignoring the facts. They have a strange aversion fer the truth. Witness their reporting on the Giffords shooting last week. Olbermann led the charge. You can't try to bamboozle the public like that and survive as a news company. They won't say so but the whole outfit is failing and in the toilet. Olbermann is first out the door because he is the biggest fool and the most offensive. Maddow runs a close 2nd and she'll be next. Talking, ranting Ed is another inexcusable reprobate. You can't run any organization fronted by this kind of lunacy. They may try to rehabilitate Mathews, Mitchell and others but they must pare the drivel of these old hippies who only appeal to 10% of the population or the whole organization will go under. There is too much media available for them to continue pretending to be mainstream when their leftist, socialist, propoganda has been thoroughly outed and repudiated.

I watched MSNBC and Fox, found that both of them gave me a perspective. Both are radical (or some would say), but I always found this man more interested in tearing down then providing answers.

I do not support Beck (although sometimes I do agree with him and other times not), but at least he tries to offer a end to the means. Maybe MSNBC can learn that even if someone is not correct, if they spend equal time tearing down and then building back up, one is much more successful then just tearing down all the time.

I will have to admit I will not miss him.

I will miss him desperately...He always treated his guests with the greatest respect (unlike his counterparts, Chris Matthews and Lawrence O'Donnell) and was a good listener as well as a factual reporter. I was never fully involved in politics until MSNBC grabbed my interest..now with Keith gone, I'm not sure the 'stand-up comedian', Rachael Maddow will suffice. Sometilmes, she puts undue pressure on her guests. Keith NEVER did..Good night & good luck, Keith. Please lemme know where you are...I'll be there, with bells on.

Bad move by NBC, inspite of their differences with Keith, he was good for ratings and the man was fair, when he made a mistake, he owned up to it...He has also bashed the President on various issues, a true reporter, unlike his counterparts across the street....

This story has gone viral in a very big way. Over 10,000 comments in less than 24 hours. Is that a new record?

No, I think Juan Williams had more. I also remember that Olbermann was back after his last little disappearing act and had this much attention as well.

While you might not agree with his style of delivery, he provided a much needed point of view in this country. Sadly, this just reflects more of the U.S. sinking into a corporate run country. Shameful. A democracy hears ALL voices, including the ones we don't like. WE then get to make up our minds about what works for us. The worst thing about this is that one voice by one voice, we sit back and let it happen. We should be enraged by this. Keith Olberman was clearly fired because he doesn't represent Comcast's point of view. I'm going to begin looking for a new provider.

This guy had the best evening ratings on MSNBC (not that they were any good) he pulled in barely over a million viewers (LOL!!)...and they still canned him...

Good riddance to a shining example of how political rhetoric has been allowed to masquerade as "news" in this country, apparently comcast does not need to pander for political favors as GE did.

Olberman should have stuck with sports, trying to market him as a journalist was a joke from the beginning.

"Olbermann dropped any pretense of journalistic objectivity, and he became a hero to liberals battered by the popularity of Fox News Channel and its conservative commentators. Olbermann openly feuded with Fox, often naming personalities like Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck "worst persons in the world" for some of their statements."

"He said on Jan. 10 that he was ending his "Worst Person in the World" feature because some viewers took literally a feature that was "born in humor."

Media should report the news or at least provide intelligent, meaningful, debate any small-minded, ineffectual, dimwit can label those they disagree with the "worst people in the world". Lets hope comcast keeps throwing out the trash at MSNBC.

Maybe you could get a job with film-maker Michael Moore. He's trying to reach rock-bottom with every film he makes, - you're good at digging holes, Keith.

Why was Keith Olbermann's contract ended? Keith spoke truth to power. He was brave and tackled many difficult issues that others shied away from. Fox News continues to spew vitriol and present lies as facts, yet the powers to be allow this to continue. We need spokes people like Keith to call it like it is.

Perhaps this particular brand of klan meets after midnight. That would be the perfect time to burn some crosses. Or so I hear....

There are many FOX viewers here, because most of this board cross checks all Cable News Stations, and then makes a decision on their Political agreements. It's like reading several or many different newspapers each day. CNN and MSNBC, and Fox--they are all interesting Stations with different views..

It seems that Keith Olbermann did not have a huge Fan Club, by the comments here today. He offended many, talking down to his audience. People don't like being treated as if they are stupid. His time was up.

His commentary set the tone and pace for all the after thoughts and commentary. Keith is a brilliant mind for the progessive and intellectual mind and thinking. His loss is a national, even global loss to aspiring to a more just and greater world. The nation needs him; the world requires him!

Why was Keith Olbermann's contract ended?

Ratings, or the lack thereof, pure and simple. He was on commercial TV, as in for profit and had to earn his way, which he obviously was not

If he wanted to perform without having to earn his way, he could have, and still can, sign up with public broadcasting, where it doesn't matter how few viewers/listeners he has or how many of the taxpayers' dollars are wasted on him. Gee, not having to earn his way, wasting the taxpayers' dollars, public broadcasting sounds a whole lot like a collectivist organization. Ya think?

Olbermann did not speak "Truth to Power", it was just hateful far left propaganda. Most everything on MSNBC is let of center by design. Wake up, he is not a journalist, just another hateful, cynical, angry liberal (there are many that have posted here) that will now fade into obscurity, because, like Air America, that negative type of format does not work. Americans are generally optimistic, reasonable, positive, and lean conservative - Olbermann is not]ne of thiose things. Wake up, your parents rae right!

Fox News lies? LMAO.. Are you serious or just a bit late in taking your medication? Keith's ultra left wing hate spewing was sickening. He's gone for his uneducated opinions and because he had maybe, 10-12 idiots who actually watched him. Fox is kicking the living crap out of such ultra idiotic so-called news organizations such as MSNBC, NBC, CNN, etc due to the fact that they at least try to show both sides of an issue. The above mentioned, so-called, news organizations have one view point, and it's from the far left. Debating this is like shooting fish in a barrel, keep swimming Katywall.

Just the reaction I wanted. You made my case. People like yourself invariably accuse others of the very traits or shortcomings for which they posses. This is typical of the reactionary mind (people who are defined not so much by what they are for but rather what or who they are against). The very definition of a narrow minded! Never let facts get in the way Steve - it is what makes you so entertaining!

                                    Kiki,

If he spoke "truth to power", then why did NO ONE watch him? His ratings were poor, at best.

You wrote of Fox News' vitriol, yet you don't mention the vitriol from Mr. Oberman OR MSNBC's.

This is the problem with the political discourse. You have NO concept of an alternate opinion, just that your side is correct, and the other isn't, or in this case the other side is "vitriolic".

I don't recall anyone at Fox news advocating harm to the president, or the vice president, the way it is, and has been done on MSNBC., regarding George Bush and Dick Cheney. There is 10 years of "hatred and violence", directed towards the former president and vice president, documented, and yet there is no outrage over that from the left. Just cries of "racism" should anyone differ with Mr. Obama. I grew up in the sixties, witnessed race wars, and i know the difference between disagreement and racism.

I watch both networks to balance the discussion, and the hatred pours from MSNBC, while, believe it or not, there are more fair discussions at Fox.

Mr. Oberman, is a vicious, disrespectful ex-sportscaster, who could not get ratings to justify his ridiculous salary.

I wonder how he waxes sympathetic to the poor and downtrodden while he collects a ludicrous amount of pay, and has a high salaried accountant help him avoid paying his proper taxes.

The worst journalist in the world, is now the worst unemployed journalist in the world.

First of all, no one should be too liberal with the use of the word liberal as a dismissal of open dicussion; in particular if they also claim to be christian; because because Jesus was a liberal whom all christians follow by his examples.

As for Keith Olbermann, it is a sad loss and one only needs to read all of his special commentaries to know the man and his sincerity.

On fox which I have tried hard to convey a fart as an added sense of smel on the Vine, Foxfart means the truthful spread of lies with deliberate distortion to the extent that it indoctrinates; in the stench of big foxfarts.

It had been suggested that Olbermann might take over Larry King's slot on CNN; I hope this is not a rumour.

Keith, I remember when I first turned on your show and saw your hamdsome face and heard your lovely voice. It was like the sky opened up and I could see Gabriel blowing his trumpet as Jesus and God almighty descended from the heavens. When you spoke your voice was like the sweetest of melodies being played on an angel's harp. Your transcendent humor caused me to laugh so hard during one of you shows I coughed up a piece of lung and had to be rushed to the hospital. In the back of the ambulance, as blood spewed from my mouth, I smiled thinking of your twinkling eyes and hair as thick as a beaver's pelt.

                                    Let's be realistic:

                                    1) It takes absolutely NO bravery to "speak out" in a country with free speech. Especially when you are getting paid as much as he did to do it.

                                    2) The show wasn't "anti-establishment"; is was OTHER-establishment. If it was anti-establishment; he would have attacked Obama with the same fervor as Bush. If he WAS "anti-establishment" then he can't be now because his candidate is in the White House. Consequntly that makes FOX the new "anti-establishment"... which is laughable.

3)NO ONE is the media is paid to tell you the truth. Dynamic personalities are leveraged to evoke emotional response and audience loyalty (nothing more loyal than a polarized audience) thereby consistantly increasing ratings which are in turn leveraged to raise advertising prices, hence increasing profit margins. This is how they make their money.

KO was fired for his insistance to tell half truths. He and others on MSNBC do this on a regular basis. That is why no one watches. That is the truth. I am a DEM, and MSNBC has done more to harm a party than all the reps out there. It is easy (and anyone with a brain will do) to fact check, and as good as he sounded on air, when fact checked and found only to be half truth trying to bend what the context of the rep was saying, he was proved to be a liar. This made the republicans sound like the good guys. The people who just say what a good guy KO is are hurting us also. JUST BE HONEST. That is what KO could not do.

                                    A Tough 2010: Keith Olbermann's Ratings Drop by 25%

The bad news keeps coming for MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. The 2010 ratings data is starting to trickle in, and the news is not so great for the Countdown host. In a down year for cable news where all three networks registered a decline in viewers, Keith Olbermann lost 11% of his total audience, but what is most troubling is that among the coveted age 25-54 demographic Olbermann lost 25% of his audience.

In terms of total viewers all three of the cable networks suffered. Fox News declined 5% in 2010 from a Monday-Friday average of 2.568 million viewers in 2009 to 2.426 million in 2010. MSNBC was down 9% in 2010 from 953,000 viewers in 2009 to 870,000 viewers in 2010. CNN suffered a stunning 36% drop in total viewers from 1 million viewers in 2009 to 636,000 viewers in 2010. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News suffered only a 6% drop, because almost 70% + of the audience is older than 54. MSNBC declined by 18% in the demo, and CNN fell by a whopping 37%.

Keith Olbermann's total drop in viewership was 2% higher than MSNBC's network average, (11% vs 9%). In contrast, Rachel Maddow lost less of her audience than MSNBC as a whole. Maddow only declined by 6% compared to the network's 11%. Maddow's total loss was almost half of her lead in Olbermann, (6% compared to 11%). Olbermann also lost a higher than network percentage of those viewers age 25-54. MSNBC lost 18%. Olbermann lost 25%. Maddow only lost 14%.

Olberman is still MSNBC's most watched host. Overall, he is the 11th most watched cable news program, but Rachel Maddow was right behind him at 13th, and Lawrence O'Donnell was 14th. The gap between Olbermann and his MSNBC primetime colleagues is shrinking, which is good for the network. The point is that Olbermann's audience is getting older, and he is working on a network that is trying to target younger viewers. This isn't to say that Olbermann is doomed at MSNBC, far from it actually, but that 2010 was not a good year for him.

With new bosses about to take over NBC, this is a trend that Olbermann and his staff would be wise to take seriously. Olbermann's contract is up after the 2012 election, and I suspect that the presidential election will serve its usual purpose as a ratings elixir for the cable news industry, but if Olbermann can't attract younger viewers, and the ad dollars that come with them, the network could make a switch, but two years is a long time away.

If CNN stays in the tank, I could see them welcoming Olbermann and his million viewers a night with open arms, which would be a big reason why MSNBC would not let him ago, along with the fact that a million viewers is still the best number MSNBC has at any hour. Olbermann has cost himself some viewers on the left in this past year, and I think he has been hurt by not having a Republican foil to play off of in the White House, plus, the passing of his father had to impact him, so I don't think Olbermann is finished yet. However, it is worth watching going forward to see if 2010 was just a bad year or the beginning of a trend.

As for "Fact Checking", it is easy to listen to the exact quotes from the people Keith O is trying to beat up. He only plays a part of what was said and counts on people like you not Fact Checking. He and MSNBC has really hurt the DEM party. The people who support this kind of reporting are lazy and only wants to hear the MSNBC propaganda. Check what they say and it will not take long to see the that KO, Chris, ODonell, and the rest are not honest to the point of really damaging the conversation (for those who do not fact check). If they continue there will be a lot of changes on msnbc. The people are not as bovine as msnbc thought.

Only Olberman had a "Worst Person In The World Feature" to label those whom he did not agree with.

MSNBC fuels itself by creating opposition in order to gain viewers who feel a need to "belong" to such a group. Hopefully comcast will continue the cleanup and turn MSNBC into real news organization that attracts viewers interested in reality rather than propaganda and rhetoric, either that or they should shut it down completely.

                                    1. I will miss Keith. He called attention to many of the issues that are only half reported by cnn and not reported at all on Fox News. He brought a voice to the uninsured, those being denied their civil rights and those facing the possibility of death due to the actions of a zealous governor who seeks more to make a political statement that be a servant of the people. If this was an issue of the new management not wanting to have to "deal with him", then shame on you. Your job is to deal and to bring to the people a voice that isn't always saying what you want it to say. If this is the new comcast regime, frankly I probably won't be watching. Maybe Rachel and Laurence can move to the BBC. Too bad msnbc - you just went from being courageous to gutless. Hope others write in and tell you the same because I realize the only reason things change on tv is because the station starts to lose viewers which in turn drops sponsorships. I hope he got every cent of his contract. He was worth it.

What do you expect from wing nuts that watch Fable news and spew hate. May they choke on their spiteful blogs. I pity them. Mr. Boehner, where are the jobs you promised?

I guess Phill Griffin was so infatuated with Roger Asles that he could not stand the most respected member of the nightly crew, and he had to get rid of him because he told the truth and brought out the lies that fixed noise was spewing on a nightly basis. Keith kept fixed noise in their proper place, as a talking point for the republican party. Controlled by big money from the republicans, and bought and paid for by republicans. I guess Phill could not stand Keith calling them out for all their lies. Too bad for MSBNC. I for one will miss his honesty, integrity, and sense of humor. He was the best thing going at MSBNC. Their loss is someone elses gain I hope. You cannot keep a good man down for long and he will bounce back, and MSNBC will be the looser in this battle.

What can one say? It appears that all of Olbermann's viewers have posted here today. Maybe that explains why his contract isn't being renewed.

It appears that all of Beck's fans are here trying to convince us that we should drop to our knees and be one of them. If this is all of the Faux News viewers, and it probably is, then maybe Faux is in trouble and will go off the air; a dream come true. I don't blame you folks as Faux offers nothing for intelligent and independent minds.

Quentin, your very own commentary and thinking is absolutely brilliant. I, too, adore, Keith. He is his own man, which places him in jeopardy with the rest of corporate America. After all, a free mind and thinking is, most assuredly, inherently, controversial, right! Because, he is, after all, not representative of the common thoughts and thinking of mid-stream, Americana.

America requires more free thinkers, not more brainwashed drones. If Keith represents a voice not inherent in the corporate world, so be it. Perhaps, he sets the compass and the journey. What America does not require is, the voices and thinking of the last hundreds of years. duhhhh

You may think they made a mistake because you enjoy his vitriol and hyperbole. It will be interesting to see who they end up putting against O'Reilly now, since Olbermann had far less than half the viewership of O'Reilly.

That's what it's all about, folks. Ratings. That's how they sell their ads, and sets the price they can charge. Nothing more, nothing less.

I enjoyed his program and unfortunately, couldn't watch as often as I would have liked. I hope he will be on, somewhere soon. This is a great loss for MSNBC.

Denverlawyer is a FOX fan. I can tell because he just say's whatever floats to the top of his brain. He doesn't need to know if he is accurate or not because to him the truth is useless.

I have a feeling that the person who refers to himself as "Denver Lawyer" is a coprophiliac. He can't seem to write a sentence without including references to excrement. Does anyone believe he's really a lawyer? I doubt it. Unless, of course, his practice is limited to representing proctologists.

My apologies to any proctologists I may have offended...

And best wishes to Keith. He will be missed. He'd really get a kick out of DL. I'd love to see what he'd do with his posts on the air!

Denverlawyer is a whiney, unsocialized, pimply-faced 14-year-old with "issues." Don't pay any attention.

Good luck Keith, we'll miss you a lot.

The fact is, Keith will be replaced by Lawrence O'Donnell and Lawrence's time slot will be filled with some one else. I will wait to see what the new scheduling brings to the channel before leaving it altogether. Keith was a commentator, not a journalist. He commented on the stories he covered from his own personal viewpoint and made no pretenses about it. In most cases, he was civil and interesting to watch. Yes, he sometimes went over the top but I new when he was doing that and took those statements with a large grain of salt. I wish him the best in whatever venture he pursues next.

From your trite, diatribe, rhetoric comments, along with the ability to use only name calling, it appears as if you don't even have a brain upstairs. Maybe that is why you are a lawyer wannabe. Try Beck and Rush, who are on the same level.

I wish Keith was tiny and I could keep him in a shoebox and play with him whenever I wanted. We would have tea parties and play games. If keith was bad I would shake the box real hard to teach him a lesson. But when he was good I would make desserts for him with my Easy Bake oven.

While it is a surprising move by MSNBC... how do you cancel one channel from your cable line up?

Yep. I can't cancel it since it comes with my regular package, but MSNBC, you just lost a loyal viewer. You won me over from CNN with Keith and Rachel especially, but now, given your penchant for quashing fresh, frank, honest and blunt voices (including your previous attempt last November), I'll be returning there. Free speech, indeed. Buh-bye MSNBC.

I then wrote a letter to MSNBC and told them I would hurl myself off a building if Keith was not re-instated immediately. After than I held a candle-light vigil in Keith's name and made a collage of pictures of Keith. I then put on my Keith Olbermann mask and pretended to be Keith for a few hours. I sat at a desk and talked in his voice. Then I went to sleep and dreamed that Keith and I were stranded on a desert island and that it was my birthday. Keith sang me songs and we made sandcastles on the beach. Later Keith read me a bedtime story. Keith.

But I also don't think Rachel's going to stay long; she seems to be of the same outspoken, blunt, utterly candid ilk Keith is, and I've a feeling she won't compromise her standards, nor will she put up with management BS, anymore than Keith did. I'll be watching for both her and Keith to show up somewhere else and go on as usual, and when they do, I'll be watching. :-)

If Keith ended the contract, that is ok. If MSNBC ended it.....quite another. I need more details in an effort to feel better.

It has everything to do with Comcast buying NBC. Most of the media is owned by republicans.

Of course it had everyting to do with Comcast....No Ratings = No New Contract.......It looks like every one of his viewers has posted here.....maybe he can take Juan Williams place at NPR....he'll fit right in over there.....

Interesting too that the deal for GE to sell NBC Universal to Comcast for $30 Billion Dollars comes (and gets federal approval) the same week Obama brings GE CEO Immelt into the Obama Inner Circle...once reserved for ChicagoLanders only....Hmmmm...I wonder. What's Immelt planning to do with that cool 30 Billion ???

Just the opposite – the same week Comcast completed the deal for NBC (and MSNBC), they fired Keith. Coincidence. I think not.

Too much of a coincidence, it has to be related to CrimeCast's hostile takeover. I don't see how a company that is responsible for content delivery can buy a content provider. It is the very definition of a monopoly, and should be against the law. ComCast is a threat to free speech, and the free flow of information.

It is a sad day to see Keith Olberman leave, So far they are moving Last Word into the 8pm timeslot, it remains to be seen who will be taking Lawerence O'Donnells time slot, hopefully they won't put in one of their conservative's we still need people that are willing to take on Faux New's mangling of the facts.

Denverlawyer, your responses are just pathetic. What makes you think Olbermann didn't work and earn? How many years was he a TV sports anchor? Come on. He must have had a million dollar contract, or more. He sat right at his COUNTDOWN desk and wrote thousands of dollars of checks to charities. You must not have been a viewer or you would know all of this. I think you need to go back to school. As I mentioned earlier, I am a teacher and I think I could teach you a thing or two about critical thinking.

Most notable Dan Rather of CBS, but your numbers plagued with this sycosis is countless as your personal animus get in the way of intellectual integrity in the realm of journalism and discourse. I'm sure many of you so called progressives are miffed and saddened by his sudden resignnation as keith mirrors much of your sentiments as well as much of your pathologies. The luny lefts race baiting, gender dividing, victim personifying days are numbered as you are "ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of truth" " to such given to there own demise as children of the corruptable and not the children of light.

You need to learn the definitions of communist and socialist. You might have a media controlled by a corporote oligarchy, or perhaps a right wing theocratic dictatorship (if you believe people on this site) but this still wouldnt be socialist or communist.

Keith centered his show around hate. You can just do that for so long. His time is up.

Someone in their organization "actually approved the hiring of Olberman and the rest of their comedy troop? Twisted, slanted, Biased, incorrect and ALL the things brain-dead Liberals attempt to say FOX does is exactly what PMS-NBC REALLY does. Viewers see right through their charade and that is exactly why their ratings remain in the toilet, while FOX continues to gain momentum... Ha Ha Ha Ha LOL.

FOX ratings simply CRUSH PMS-NBC because a rapidly growing percentage of the population obviously LIKE and ENJOY watching FOX more than ALL other networks... combined.

@speedy - Just because Fox's ratings crush everyone elses doesn't mean they are right. As a matter of fact, two years ago their management admitted in federal court that they color the news, slant the news to a particular view, and even MAKE NEWS UP. None of which is against the law, apparently. The left didn't make that up.

Many people read the National Enquirer. It probably has one of the largest readerships of any newspaper in the country. I, myself prefer the Weekly World News because I enjoy science fiction. However, popularity doesn't prove value. Keith Olbermann was one of the most valuable commentators on TV period. He smacked the left and right with equal fervor when he found them lacking. He said much of what many of us wanted him to say and he said it loudly. In that he was no different from many right-wing commentators, except that Keith doesn't get a daily fax from Karl Rove telling him what to say.

And, like Keith said not so long ago, the unwashed masses will vote themselves bread and circuses (or beer and cigarettes) whenever possible. People like Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch know this, and take great pleasure in taking their money and manipulating their minds. I would not doubt that the primary purpose in Comcast purchasing MSNBC was to literally shut them down.

Keith will be sorely missed. So will MSNBC when it becomes the Motocross Channel.

High ratings should not be an indication of truth or balanced reporting; and definitely not an indication of an informed audience. Often it shows the ability of media to manipulate a message and influence people who cannot understand or do not bother to understand both sides of an issue.

Look at North Koreans. If they read the paper and listen to the news everyday, does that make them informed? The state run agencies providing that information has the most viewers!

How about Germany in the late 1930's? The media falsely vilified the Jews as being the cause of their economic problems, which led to the mass support of the Nationalist Socialist movement.

That is what you get when the media is not balanced, has their own political narrative to promote and does so by dismissing facts. It is especially apparent when they use fear to stir up emotional support. The ability to get large groups to follow them (or large ratings), shouting down other's points of views and silencing facts, is not an indication of something good or worthwhile. Instead it is very unpatriotic and non- Madisonian

There is a reason the founding fathers had freedom of speech as the first amendment. There is a reason they put such an emphasis on education. To be a country, governed by the people, the people needed to be educated and able to be informed on both sides of issues. If you are always listing to the same message or different people with the same message you are not informed. Some of the cable shows and talk shows with the highest ratings have gotten there through emotional misinformation. Like the host of largest talk radio show always says. "You don't need to think. I will tell you how to think." As a patriot, that is not the direction I want this country to go.

I totally agree with Curtis-2894511. Education is vital. You must have opportunities to see as many sides as possible, because there is almost always another side. With education, and empathy, you can put yourself in another place, appreciate another point of view, agree to disagree, compromise, and be civil about it. Loaded words, to me, are a cue that an opinion is being shared, not a fact. With education, loaded words can be identified for what they are.

Keith, I will especially miss your special comments. I didn't always agree with you, but you made me think. I am grateful for that.

Your feature "worst persons in the world" is something my daughter and I wait for nightly, and get great enjoyment from the stories you highlight. Your special comments are usually spot-on, and the one after the shooting in Tucson especially so. God Bless you and all you've been through in the last two years with your parents; you are a good, caring son - that's incredibly evident. I don't know how you managed to continue to deliver a quality program every night with what you were going through, but it is a testimony to your professionalism. Please continue to write, and continue your special comments - just set up a youtube channel and release them there! We'll all subscribe. Good luck with your future, and thank you for all you've done.

Perhaps it is too bad that most of southern America didn't win some kind of stalemate during the Civil War so that conservatives could have their own nation, and liberals could have their own nation, and both sides could run their own nations the way that both see fit.

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists, and Obama supporters,

We've stuck together since the late 1950s, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know that we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and just will not ever agree on what's right. So let's just end it right now while we can do it on friendly terms. We can smile, shake hands, chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and each go our own way.

So here's a model separation agreement.

Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by land mass, each taking a portion. That's going to be the difficult part, but I'm sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy. Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate taste.

In that spirit: We don't like redistributive taxes so you can have those. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. And since you hate guns and you hate war, we'll take the firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell. But you are going to be responsible for finding a biodiesel vehicle big enough to haul them around.

We'll keep the capitalists, entrepreneurs, small businesses, the greedy corporations, the pharmaceutical companies; we will keep Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have the labor unions, homeless, the homeboys, the hippies, environmentalists, and illegal aliens. We will keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, the greedy CEOS, big oil, all of the rednecks and tea partiers. We'll keep the Bibles, Fox News, Glenn Beck, Bill Oriely, and Rush Limbaugh. We'll let you have the Koran, Dianetics, CNN, Kieth Oberman, John Stewart, Bill Mar, NBC, and all of liberal Hollywood. We'll keep the closet Hollywood conservatives and libertarians forced into hiding.

We'll keep the national oil resources, clean coal, nuclear, cold fusion technologies. While also cutting red tape for engineers and US corporations to explore and experiment with new technologies without having oppressive union and special interests bogging said technologies down with Federal regulation and labor negotiations. You can use the wind, solar, and kinetic power (bicycles and hand cranks hooked up to a light bulb for all you in Rio Linda). If you can find any engineers to work those out.

You can be nice to Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer anybody that threatens us. You can have the peaceniks and the war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we will provide them with security. You won't have to worry about it. We will keep our Judeo-Christian values. We'll keep our definition of marriage you can keep yours. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, Psychic hot lines, and Shirley Maclaine. You can also have the UN, but we will no longer pay the bill.

We will keep the SUVs, the pickup trucks and the oversize luxury cars. You can have the compacts, the subcompacts and every Geo you can find. You can give everybody health care, if you can find any practicing doctors. We will continue to believe that health care is a privilege and not a right. We'll let charitable people choose to help those in need not force them to carry dead weight and unmotivated entitlement minded people. We will keep "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Star spangled banner", and I am sure you will be happy to substitute in their place "Imagine"," I'd like to teach the world to sing", or "We are the world." We will practice trickle-down economics and you can give trickle-up poverty your best shot. And since it so offends you, we will keep our history, our name, our constitution, and our flag. We will of course remove the stars representing your portion of the land agreement.

Since all the liberal programs have crippled those states and run them into the ground at the direction of it's voters. THEY ARE ALL YOURS! Along with their crippling debt and constituents.
Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along other like-minded liberal and conservative patriots. I agree with many who have commented....Keith has been one of the best, most honest, most thought-provoking hosts of all. Please, for the sake of our COUNTRY and DEMOCRACY, do NOT leave us, Keith!!! And, maybe Michael Moore can join on your new channel as well!!

PMS-NBC finally started "taking out the trash?"

PMS-NBC exemplifies why, Liberalism is a Serious Brain Disorder.

When one considers that "upper management" at PMS-NBC not only interviewed, but hired and PAY their lineup of "brain dead circus clowns" and then sit around and have meetings to "analyze why their ratings are SO BAD?"

Obviously, poor ratings = low advertising sales?

From upper management on down, PMS-NBC PROVES to the entire world how to HIRE the "dumbest of the dumb and the worst of the worst".

PMS-NBC = Failures, losers, social rejects and brain dead losers.

You people need to wake up. O'Reily, Rush, Olbermann, Beck, they all pander to their audience and speak from their paychecks, not their hearts. And you try to argue that conservatives are brainwashed?

If anyone is "lost" on this topic it is PMS-NBC for even hiring that turd in the first place.

Fortunately for them, by DUMPING Olberman Out with the TRASH suggests that PMS-NBC "may be coming to their senses" after realizing their ratings suffer severely when compared to all other news channels... and ESPECIALLY against FOX, where they get DESTROYED every single hour of every single day... oops?

Low ratings = LOW advertising dollars; that's how it works... period.

Obvious FACT: Keith couldn't bring in advertising dollars? He IS GONE! If that slug had "any degree of popularity" the AD dollars would be there to prove it and they would keep him. That just is not the case... is it?

PMS-NBC basically said, "Hey Keith, thanks for nothing!"

Hasta la vista to an all time LOSER... and a true horror of a human being! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha LOL

While the ratings continue to SOAR for all the ones they all love to hate; Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly and many other "conservative format shows" constantly break advertising records.

How about that Libs? How about that?

I cannot adequately express the sense of loss I feel over Keith Olbermann's sudden departure.
I had such respect for MSNBC's courage in providing an antidote to the disinformation and vitriol that all too often seem to dominate the prime time airwaves.

What - who - can possibly fill the void left by Countdown's irascible, clever, and bighearted host?

What does this mean for America, if we lose a lone voice of reason in the sea of prime-time disinformation and hate?

What does this say about YOU, MSNBC producers?

God help us; I am so very sad.

I'm curious as to why everything this man says, so opinionated, so far left, is seen as couragious, voice of reason, but opinions by conservatives is "faux news" and biased. Always amazes me, just sayin'.

That said, I think that Olbermann has every right to contribute to whatever campaign he wants -- he's an American. And it's not like his show was meant to deliver straight, unbiased news - it was a commentary, which is good, and needed on both sides to deliver opinions. I hope that's not the reason they parted ways.

May 20, 2009 Amendment You can also have the great States of California, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey, and Michigan. Since all the liberal programs have crippled those states and run them into the ground at the direction of it's voters. THEY ARE ALL YOURS! Along with their crippling debt and constituents.
Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along other like-minded liberal and conservative patriots. And if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the friendly spirit of parting, I'll bet you ANWAR which one of us will need whose help in about 15 years.

O'Reilly, Beck, Hannity, etc. are clearly opinion shows and are presented as such, and I'm thinking you believe the information they put out there consists of "actual lies" because you disagree with it. I often disagree with it, too.

I believe we need to hear both sides of an argument to truly form an opinion. I rarely watch MSNBC, but I read it so I'm getting varied opinions.

Will no longer watch the 3 hours a night with Chris Matthews, Keith, and Rachel. He is the best thing on television!! Get him back on the air, NOW, or lose a tremendous amount of viewership. That is how it works. Like Keith, Katie Couric's ratings have been in the basement ever since she's been on air and CBS is suffering because of their ignorant decision to make her an anchor. The ONLY reason she's still there is because of her "existing contract". As soon as they can... CBS will DUMP Couric too. ABC, NBC, CBS and even CNN ALL get DESTROYED in the ratings game compared to FOX? Funny how that works huh?

Keith is gone, while Rush, Hannity, Beck and all the other "conservative radio and TV shows generate MILLIONS and MILLIONS in ad revenue.

Having a decent exchange of ideas would be nice. Being in disagreement without being disagreeable would be very nice. Apparently most of the folks that write here from the left don't have the manners they should to be seen or heard in public.

But that's going to be difficult to fill these shoes. I sure hope you know what the hell you're doing Comcast.... 'cause I sure as hell don't.

Personally, I think that MSNBC made a wise choice. While I'm a liberal, Mr. Olbermann was arrogant and did not always check his facts.

That's why Fox ratings (which are peanuts compared to broadcast networks) will always be higher than a show like Kieth's geared for progressives. That audience is mostly on the internet.

Fox's audience will literally die out over the next few years.

You can actually sell ads if you've got Keith's viewership, but when they turn off the TV and hit the Huffingtonpost, MSNBC is screwed.

Maybe they can soon reclaim their pride and history. Olberstoopid's leaving is a terrific first step.

Old white people watch cable "news." That's why Fox ratings (which are peanuts compared to broadcast networks) will always be higher than a show like Kieth's geared for progressives. That audience is mostly on the internet.

Fox's audience will literally die out over the next few years.

This Comcast-MSNBC merger is the first step in the right-wing propaganda takeover of the media. Second step, getting rid of Keith. Probably the reason they haven't gotten rid of Rachel and the few others is that they have contracts that are newer than Keith's was. Pretty soon there will be no liberal voices left in broadcast media and then Comcast will start charging a fortune to access liberal websites. You watch.

And, to see that we are leaders in this 21st century.

There are some who didn't vote in the mid-term and as a result the dark side is back in - the same people who nearly gave us another great depression - they've discovered a new way to lie and it's even easier because our country has gone to a place we've never been before - short memories we Americans have. If you are one of those people - lest we not forget the state this country was in in 2008 - don't be frightened by those people - they want you to be confused and frightened so that you don't vote - GOTV!! Start now because they are...

No where and nothing reflects my thinking like MSNBC. Keith is a gifted orator and thinker, whom I follow and track, all the time. When he made commentary after the recent Arizona tragedy, I fell in love with him, all over again. I think, he is one of the most brilliant and free thinkers on MSNBC. And, the world needs more like him, not less, most certainly.

I strip my clothing off and crawl to you. Please, make peace with this man, who is totally free; his own free thoughts and reasoning. America needs more like, Keith, not less, duhhhh.

He will go wherever the money takes him. Do not sell your soul to him for he is taking it to the bank. We are all suckers as usual. Do not watch any of this back and forth dribble pitting half of us against the other. Volunteer. Get involved locally where you can really have an effect. Do something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will find if we meet each other face to face we are all good honest people deep down. This impersonal media stuff harms us all greatly. Meet your neighbor liberal or conservative and if we take the time to be fair with each other we will see though we may not agree on everything we are all still good honest Americans who want the best for everyone. Stop the hate which in my opinion Keith helped perpetuate. We can us good ideas but please stop allowing them to get away with mixing it with hate. Do not be a follower but a doer. Do not be a viewer; be a doer. I am basically a conservative but would love to meet you a liberal and become good friends. Face to face. See you in the neighborhood.

It is truly saddening to see a truthful voice like Keith Olbermann leave the airways and the timing of his departure with the Comcast/MSNBC merger sure is suspicious. Keith was the breath of fresh air that the media needed to offset all the hate and lies that the right-wing leaning media like Fox (Fix News) consistently puts out. American Journalism and Newscasters have always been the voices of truth in the world and Keith Olbermann maintains that long held tradition but with him gone, except for a few free thinkers left, that great tradition will be trashed by the slants, narrow views and lies that Fox and similar newsmedia will keep on spreading. To Comcast/MSNBC, if your intentions are sincere about reporting the news truthfully and remaining a sensible source of news, you need to correct the mistake of getting Keith Olbermann off the air.
