Is it time for Jennifer Aniston to break out as a movie actress?

She's cute and likable, but can the "Friends" star continue to pull that off as she ages? Is there more to her than her looks and charm, or is that all she needs?

I don't know what's worse - the fact this author is reviewing a movie that is not even out yet, or creating an article based on non-sensical fluff with no real substance or goal in order to coat tail Aniston's ability to generate web traffic. So disgraceful and parasitic.

At the end of the day, your opinion on her acting talent is just one and subjective. There is plenty of other opinion on her acting chops that differ. Thus, my question - what is the POINT?

You opinion can be applied to a few other actresses in her genre. But why not dump it on Aniston because it generates you hits the easy way. Not much different from what you accuse Aniston of doing isn't it? Man, where is YOUR integrity? And people accuse Aniston of generating false PR? Please. This article clearly demonstrates you need her, more than she needs you.

I dunno, I kind of actually like this article. I love Aniston, and of course will see her next movie without question. But I think this article made a really good point, she can't play cute and sweet forever...

Personally, I'd love to see her take on a really bitchy role. I think she'd make a good one :)

      #1.3 - Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:25 AM EDT

Why is it so important that Aniston ever even make another movie? She has more money than anyone can spend in one lifetime. She doesn't ever HAVE to do anything, so why does the author of this article even find it necessary to write about her?

        #1.4 - Wed Aug 18, 2010 11:23 AM EDT

        Who?

        Why?

I'm sorry, I was too distracted by the current Depression and two overseas wars (one illegal) that are depleting the Treasury and fomenting misery upon the American Middle Class, to take notice.

What about "breaking out"....how about some Oxy 10?

I absolutely love and agree with this review!!!

This is the classic story of an actress / human being who just rides on her easiest assets and never raises the bar an inch for an instant!

Let me tell you a true story: I have a friend who was trying to make it in the media in NYC at the same time Jennifer Aniston was trying out her acting career before she headed west to Hollywood. My friend let J.A. live with her rent free for over two years because she took pity on her and was at least making enough to pay her bills - which J.A. was not... well, years later J.A. makes it thanks to "Friends". It happens that my friend went out west to Hollywood for an event in honor of another friend of hers.

She thought, Hey, I'll look up Jen and maybe we can catch up. Aniston recognized her, knew exactly who she was and what she had done for her and all she had to say was - why don't you just get yourself a hotel room and I'll catch you another time. Blew her off completely - and my friend says this is what she has heard from all J.A.'s "old friends" who knew her on the way up and helped her selflessly when she was seriously struggling and almost gave up long long ago.

What does all this mean - she's not who you want to think she is, she is not one to go out of her way for anyone but herself, she's a user, one-way, and not of good character... and it shows by the way she won't take a chance or a risk with her career... she is a fake and a phony.

Call me skeptic, but I really have a hard time believing your "true" story. Her father is an actor and I highly doubt she couldn't find a place to live without relying on the 'kindness of strangers'. I'm just sayin'.

I just wish these entertainment "journalists" would proofread their fluff articles before they submit them.  I mean seriously, "Actress can only COST on her golden girl looks and likability so long."  Ms. Bunting can only "coast" on her very limited writing skills for so long.

Sarah D. Bunting needs to become a real journalist and at least see a film first before trashing a movie, (unless she's just "riding on her easiest asset, and jumping on the tabloid bandwagon of writing about Jen Aniston just to get hits"). Her little "mean girl" piece on Jennifer just shows what can happen when you fall by the wayside in the newsroom.

Sarah B needs to find her talent and get a real career, at least Jen has one (and she does, she's turning out movies that do sell, she keeps getting scripts and she keeps making the Forbes list every year, she will still be a fixture in Hollywood for a long time to come)

This garbage could have easily been written for half of Hollywood...none of these "A-list" actors have arrived either...they all leave something to be desired, even the one's that have Oscars. This business is a crapshoot at best and actors are never guaranteed that every role that they pick is going to be considered a stellar performance or that every movie will be a hit with the audience, even if it is a big, intense drama.

@dwightmlee...get over it already, there was probably a very good reason why she would not date you or look your way...so stop hating

Aniston's mistake is that she has stuck to broad comedy and filled the "girlfriend/wife" role never breaking out of the Friends mold next for her is a movie playing Miley Cyrus's mother, she should have followed in the footsteps of Sally Field who made the transition from TV sitcoms to comedies to Oscar winning performances and back to television seemlessly because she used her relatabliity as a tool...she has gotten more than her share of accolades for the two risky roles that she took the Good Girl and Derailed and neither performance is really that memorable.

"she should have followed in the footsteps of Sally Field who made the transition from TV sitcoms to comedies to Oscar winning performances..."

It takes talent to win an Oscar. It isn't something that can usually be won merely by working hard and wanting it. Aniston hasn't shown that she has what it takes to win an Oscar, which is what the article is addressing...that she has not taken any challenging roles to show that she has true talent or acting range. Thus, she doesn't necessarily have the ability to follow in the footsteps of Sally Field.

Hey, Sarah. Maybe you should actually first watch the movie before carelessly dismissing it as "B- fare." Was it a slow news day for you? It's reckless journalism to try to influence the opinions of others before you have the facts straight. And, as a woman, I am surprised that you jump on the "Jen is too old for these roles" criticism. What about Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis. At their age, shouldn't they being playing roles more suited to their age instead of "tough guy"?

Berry-B - you are overlooking one obvious difference between Aniston, Stallone and Willis, which is that Aniston is female. It's a known fact that there are few good roles for women after a certain age, mainly because men run Hollywood. Both Stallone and Willis are showing their age to the point that it is entirely unbelievable that they are tough guys, but they get away with it because of all the pathetic males living vicariously through their movies.

I disagree. Aniston is a fine comedic actress. I enjoy her movies. If male actors can do comedy their entire career why can't a woman? I love Steve Martin, Adam Sandler, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Chevy Chase...all over 40. Jennifer doesn't need to fit into your idea of a movie career; she is successful in the best movie genre of all--comedy!!! And by the way, men can be attractive, sexy and romantic after 40, why not women too??!! Jennifer is not coasting...she is doing what she enjoys. Leave her alone. There are more useful things YOU could be doing.

                  Totally agree with mightOP.
I happen to think Aniston is one of the best comedic actresses around today with her immpecable timing, emotive expressions and not overacting. To top it off she can also do drama. With Aniston I feel like I am watching the character and not a big star. I get that with Clooney but I don't always get that from Matt Damon or Julia Roberts, both of whom I like.
Many other actresses would have been trampled by Vaughn in TBU but she more than held her own and showed good range in both the sparring and tender moments.

As for her other fare, I think she did great in Derailed and I thought it was a great movie. Your comment about "Aniston doesn't commit to being a jerk" doesn't even make sense so it seems you didn't get it.
In Friends with Money, Aniston did great and IMO McDormand and Cusack overacted in their roles while Aniston and Keener were great.
In Marley & Me, both Jen and Owen were the touching emotional center of the film, humanizing it. Otherwise it would have been just another dog farce story.

While I like a lot of her films there are some that fall short such as Love Happens (poor script) and The Bounty Hunter (poor script and editing). But Jen's acting in both were fine. To notice she didn't have dirt under her fingernails as a florist in LH is beyond nuts. I don't even remember if there was a scene where she was supposed to have had her hands in dirt, but if you are talking in general terms then you have no idea how often florists wash their hands or keep their hands clean.

Lastly, did Brad Pitt personally tell you that Aniston's charm was "no match for the gorgeous, dangerous, slightly unhinged and therefore fascinating Angelina Jolie" or is this just your subtle snark coming through.

Rom-coms is the worst, most boring, lowest-common-denominator genre out there, and if you don't know that, then you're @!$%#ing retarded.

Aniston has played it safe her entire career. I love actresses (and actors) over 40 who are all over the map but who actually act. Maggie Smith, Sally Field, Holly Hunter, Isabelle Huppert, Judy Dench, Meryl Streep, Madeline Kahn, Terri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Shelley Winters... the list goes on. Every single one of them has taken huge risks. 'Nough said.

                    Good work, Bunting.

I agree with you. Rom-coms are so predictable, it takes absolutely zero brain power to watch it. I can't see why so many females still flock to these types of movies. They make women come off as too stupid, controlling, obsessive, and borderline crazy.

For the same reason that men flock to unrealistic action adventure movies...it's a diversion. It certainly doesn't takes any additional brain power to watch Rambo defeat 75 commandos with a pocket knife and slingshot, so don't criticize women for liking romance comedies. At least the plots to those are not as far fetched as the plots to "tough guy" flicks.

If you can't see why women flock to rom-coms, I can't see why men flock to action movies. Oh wait, I can! Because they're men. They enjoy seeing scantily clad women, guns shooting tons of people, and stunts. If I could figure out why men like action movies, why can't you imagine why women would like rom-coms and just leave them to it?

One pet peeve of mine is the male movie reviewer who never seems to meet a rom-com that he likes. Why send a guy who hates rom-coms to review one?

                      #16.3 - Thu Aug 19, 2010 7:17 PM EDT

Additionally, at least in a Rom-Com we are not going to have to look at tits and ass, displayed in a manner for men's tastes. Imagine being a woman and then watching all those movies out there, with the many scenes of naked women, or women getting violated or f*cked in various ways while naked. In any movie where there's a naked man, men act all outraged and embarassed, without ever really thinking about that women have to watch movies with naked women in them all the time. Example, "The Crying Game" where the man's penis was shown in the movie. Hell, when I went to that movie at the theatre right when it had come out, at least a dozen men in the movie theatre got up and walked out when that scene was shown during the movie. Some of them were swearing. Part of the reason for that, I think, is because a penis was shown in the movie.

Yeah some men do comedies all their lives, like Steve M, Adam S, Jackie C. They were still in the business. Without G-d, we can not do anything. As long as her roles do not have an immoral influence, she do not need to do dark roles just to get an Oscar. It is better for her to stop being an actress than playing abominations in the sight of G-d. See what movies can do, Kathy B murderer won an Oscar, Charlize playing homo won an Oscar, list a lot of them, as if you need to shun your eyes from these wicked things that this world hail and worship. MOVIES should not be allowed for Christians who are preparing spiritually and mentally to see these evils continually. For these would callous their minds for what the LORD had prepared for them in heaven. In heaven there is no beer or Vodka, why stop drinking beer or Vodka now and be happy living a simple natural joyful life with the Spirit of G-d in a lifestyl of holiness.

Yeah, lifestyle of holiness RIGHT NOW is important for those people who WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN. Because the end of the world is coming soon. Our hope is to be with G_d forever in an everlasting joy with peace and no more sins. Who would dare to stand in principles for G_d in death than to break His laws. Saint Daniel did pray still despite that the King would throw him in a lions den. If am an actress I would stop doing my job if that would break my principles in following G-d's will or commandments. And what the writer is asking from my friend Jennifer (who do not know me) is superficial and non biblical challenge. But I was glad to see her outside the premiere across the street-that she was too nice and genuine when she greeted her fans who were been patiently waiting for her. I prayed to see her then I saw her. I prayed this morning asking G-d if I will see her in heaven, or I will be judging her in heaven. If I will be judging her in heaven it means she is one of the lost. But the Lord impresses me that, no, for whatever reason, I will see her in heaven. If I will see her in heaven it means for whatever reason that I am not aware of - she is one of the saints. I am praying for her that someday she will come to the foot of the cross. That is what matter most, her love for Jesus, her relationship with the LORD, Christians should now build a treasure in their hearts that would get them rewards or thropies in heaven. An Oscar is nothing compared to what Jesus had prepared for Jennifer in heaven. Jesus said, " if you love me keep my commandments," it is written Jesus said, " I will go to prepare a place for you, in my father's house are many mansions, I will come again to receive you to myself that where I am there you may be also."

Aniston is an attractive and talented woman in what she does, but she just keeps playing Rachel over and over ad nauseum. She needs a good thriller where she plays the psycho serial killer or something, ANYTHING, other than sweet and cute. These one-note roles do her no service. While I think the author went overboard with the criticism, Aniston would be wise to start looking for roles with a little more meat to them.

I liked 'Friends with Money' a lot and believed in the Aniston character. Her perfect grooming is a distraction, as are the perfect haircuts etc of male actors. A more courageous actress takes more risks. I wish Jennifer Aniston would make better choices or be better advised on her roles. I do believe she has it in her to do something really challenging.

For my money, Angelina Jolie isn't much of an actress and certainly not better than Jennifer Aniston. In 'The Changeling' she just pouted and said 'He' s not my son'. She does take more risks but just barely. Look at Cate Blanchet, Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep et al for real acting chops.

Angelina Jolie isn't much of an actress and certainly not better than Jennifer Aniston!!!! Man, your judgement is just screwed. Angelina is a wonderful actress with great range. In Changling she just pouted and said he's not my son?????? Did you even see this movie?

me actually your judgment is screwed you cant even spell...and Angelina is the total opposite of Jennifer..she plays real dark tom boy strong roles, where Jennifer plays mostly sensual roles...they are about equal in my book...Jenn is still a natural...watch her on screen...natural....its funny how people like you come online and boast your ego's and your knowledge but you sound really pathetic..like how many exclamation marks you have after you state Jens last name Aniston..like its really something important to you....do you see people dying getting killed out here..that deserves !!!! wow a true loser...

While I was watching the Changeling, my mind kept on having flashbacks to Girl Interrupted, and I kept on thinking to myself, "Haven't I seen Angelina do this role before?" And, the action movies pretty much have her playing the same tough girl too, so I don't think the aforementioned criticism of Jolie is entirely out of line.

I'd rather watch Meryl Streep or Cate Blanchett over Angelina any day too.

Jen Aniston needs to fade into obscurity. She is dull and uninteresting. Her personal life is pathetic and she has been irrelevant ever since Friends went off the air.
