@ Marc: "Fight Club" is possibly the most underrated movie of all time, and you're right. I've watched it countless times and there is always something new. "Across The Universe" is another soon to be classic.
I concur with just about all the movies mentioned. But does anyone here recall "Medium Cool"? ..."This is REALLY Happening!..." Talk about films reflecting society!
I'd put Videodrome, I think that was the name of the movie on the list. And all the movies that's been posted so far as well. There are so many trippy movies that a top 5 list can't do it justice.
Blue Velvet was Lynch's Masterpiece. Timely too since Dennis Hopper just passed. In my opinion. Hopper's Frank was the greatest villian ever on the screen. Pure malice, no remorse, and a ton of symbolism that only Dennis Hopper could bring to life. And he uttered the greatest villain line ever- "Now its Dark". RIP Dennis, and thanks.
Mine's gotta be Vanilla Sky. It takes a couple of watches to see it all happening. We watch him fall apart and share in his self realization! The music and cg backgrounds are just perfect on the rooftop scene.
"Vanilla Sky" is a remake of the Spanish film "Open Your Eyes (Abre los Ojos)," which was made only a few years earlier. It's very interesting to watch the original, which is arguably a tighter, more focussed film.
Fight Club is always a classic when it comes to great "mind-trip" movies. Everytime I watch it I notice something new.
It came out a long time ago, but Altered States really blew my mind

The Game with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn.
Jacob's Ladder was a good journey into the unexpected.
Donnie Darko tops my list for mind-trippyness.
Got to put a vote in for In the Mouth of Madness. Great Sam Neil flick. A must see for anyone who is a H.P. Lovecraft fan.
The Usual Suspects is another one and yes, LOVED Memento.
A bit corny by today's standards but the PBS version of The Lathe of Heaven was extraordinary at the time, around 1980ish, for a television movie.
I'll second that. It was fantastic! Wonder if it's viewable nowadays?

The movie IF with Malcolm McDowel is inspired, and don't forget McDowel's other classic A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (Kubrick directed).
So glad you mentioned "if...." ! A truly original film.
"what dreams may come" is another good one for movies that make you think. id have to say its one of robin Williams best performances
I'd put Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and the original Planet of the Apes on the list!

Death to Videodrome! Long live the new flesh!
My choice for mind-blowing visuals, twisted story line and a total trip is Brazil. A must see
I watched Memento backwards, from last scene to first. It was even more fun.
The weirdest movie ever, BY FAR, is Eraserhead. Worth seeing once, just to totally freak you out.
"Freaks" should always be on any list of ones that will blow your mind.

How about "Requiem For A Dream?" That movie stayed in my head for months after I saw it.
Check out "Primer". You have to pay attention and not think too much, though. Several "what the...?!" momentsĀ guaranteed.
The Usual Suspects should have been on the list.
what about "Jacob's Ladder?" A nightmare story with a beautiful ending...
1.) Donnie Darko 2.) The Butterfly Effect 3.) A.I. 4.) Event Horizon 5.) Vanilla Sky 6.) Fight Club........
