Condolences to the Harris family.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead. Walt Whitman

Words are lost to me right now. Captain Phil will be missed by many, he came into our homes every week and was like a welcomed friend. So shocking and sad.

Condolences to Captain Phil's family. I am sure there are many prayers going to his family. God has called another angel home.

I will miss watching this man on TV..

I cannot imagine what his boys are going through. Hell the entire crew of that boat was his extended family.

The world would be a better place with a few more Phills around.

This stinks, he was my favorite Captain on the show.

I remember telling my girlfriend last year if he kept smoking 3 packs a day and (what was it again, 12 cans of Red Bull a day?) he was going to be in trouble.

Hopefully this opens some eyes (*cough* Sig's) and saves someone else from an early death.

I am crying right now. Rest in peace Phil - we will miss you very much.

Josh and Jake, you will have many lasting memories of your dad - good, bad, funny, sad, all of those memories are precious. His love for the two of you was so obvious (as yours was for him) and it was a great joy to watch the three of you banter.

I am so very sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry Josh and Jake. Your dad had a great sense of humor and he is one of the reasons I watched the show year after year. He left behind a great legacy starting with his two boys. It was obvious captain Harris was very proud of his two boys. I hope his boys carry on with the fishing business in honor of their father who was a great and fearless fisherman.

Quite a shock. I enjoyed his no-nonsense intensity.

He really struggled with health problems on several seasons, though.

Hopefully, his family is doing well, considering....

Really enjoyed watching his calm and collective decision making process (and comments). Glad it happened in port, and quick, right up there with dying in sleep.

Best wishes to his family.

My condolences to the whole family (crew included), as well. His sons do have a lot to live up to, but not to measure up to their dad. They are not him, and cannot be him, nor should they be. They only have to take what he taught and instilled in them, take their own life experiences, and live up to their own potential. I believe they will. It will be harder without their dad here physically in their cheering section, but they will always have him within their hearts. Blessings!

My deepest sympathies to the Harris family. Captain Phil was the best Captain of the fleet. Phil Harris will be missed by all.

They should rename the boat for Capt. Phil. He truly put his life into his work.

GOD bless Phil and the Harris family.

No, you don't rename a boat after her skipper dies, any more than you would legally change YOUR name to your mother's after she died.

In the first place, boats are traditionally named after women and I don't think Cap'n Phil would appreciate it.

In the second place, it's just not done. Boats have personalities; changing her name would upset her (Don't believe me? Trying calling your wife or girlfriend by a different name!) and cause more problems than they can handle.

      Fisherman's Prayer

God grant that I may live to fish

      For another shining day,

But when my final cast is made

      I then most humbly pray,

When nestled in your landing net

      As I lay peacefully asleep,

You'll smile at me and judge

That I'm "good enough to keep."

Y'know, that is a sweet bit of poetry, but Phil Harris was anything but "sweet". I don't think he'd "humbly pray". I think he'd shrug at the Almighty and say "Your catch, your call. If ya keep me, fine. If not, well, it was a helluvagood life. Thanks."

When storm gales blow and shake my soul

And I am lost at sea,

Then comes a light that shines so bright

      A beacon sent to me

      When tattered sails are useless

      And Darkness covers me,

An unseen hand takes o’er the helm

      And steers me round alee.

And as the first star of the night

      Shines through so vividly,

My bounty lies in His good Grace

      Blessed by the Trinity

I logged onto my home page and when I first saw the headline of a death from deadliest catch I was thinking "Oh man...no way hopefully it's not Captain Phil" Then to find out it is! I am so sorry for Josh and Jake his sons and for the whole family! Captain Phil was a class act all the way and my favorite captain from the show. His loss is going to be devastating to not only his family but also the other captains who know him and all who have fished up in the Bering Straight !

Hopefully his sons are able to hang in there and realise how much he loved them and how much he loved to fish !

For all the Deadliest Catch fans this is truly a very sad day ! R.I.P. Captain Phil!

Captain Phil was one of my favorites on "Deadliest Catch". My deepest condolences go out to his family. To his truly remarkable sons: From what I saw of your father on the show, you had an awesome dad who gave you superb "man training". They broke the mold when they made him. Please carry that with you as you grow older and pass his legacy to your own sons one day, if you two choose to have any. He will be sadly missed.

          To the Harris Family,
You have my biggest hug to you all in this time of need. Your Captain allowed us into his world for just a short but intense part of his life. You knew him best, I respect you few.

--To his shipmates, fly your pennants and colors true, in passing of a Captain, known unto you.

--To the Discovery channel crew, camera-men, and of course "Mike", for bringing this piece of Americana to us in your own way. Forever on tape, forever in our hearts, thoughts and prayers; Well done Discovery!

--To you, the viewer, Beware of your step, across the plank, to a world unknown yet to the few......your venture, your dream, your destiny,...tried by many, lost too many.....for the same step you take has been taken by many. I dare you into this world, of true living and true death, working so hard, freezing to death....the sea, her power and endless motion, throws caution into your notion...of your first step. (I just made this up, for you all. as a former trap-puller on the east-coast, I blow my horn for the passing of the Cornelia Marie.)

I have to say. My stomach hasn't dropped after reading an MSNBC death announcement like this, maybe ever.

I loved watching Phil and the sincerest love he had for his sons on the show, and the love of the sea.

And just a flat-out fabulous character.

I am actually sad. This show defines "reality" and that's why it hurt to watch someone you rooted for go through physical pain.
